    This is an application to sit an exam and be placed on an eligible list for this title, not an application for a specific job. A $35 application fee applies to Non-Public-Safety announcements issued on or after 2026-02-01. There may be no current vacancy behind it, and the list it produces may not be certified for months or years.

    Open to permanent employees in the competitive division who hold a qualifying lower title in the same unit. A $35 application fee applies to Non-Public-Safety announcements issued on or after 2026-02-01. Like the open competitive exam, this places you on a list; it is not itself a job offer.

Examples of work

  • Supervises and assists individuals in the performance of their simple and repetitive job tasks, provides assistance to those who may have difficulty learning new skills, while being aware of patient's performance level and any deviations from the norm.
  • Observes individuals appearance, attitude, motivation, etc. and refers any occurrence of significant behavioral changes to professional staff.
  • Organizes individuals into work groups according to their abilities, sets up work area, supplies each individual with materials and anticipates individual's material needs in order to maintain a constant production flow.
  • Inspects finished products by checking quality in accordance with established standards in order to maintain quality control.
  • Guides and assists individuals in various light assembly tasks such as packaging various commercial items and in the proper use of various hand tools and machinery such as heat sealers, sonic sealers, drill press, electric screw driver, etc., in order to insure their proper use in performing the assigned tasks.
  • Assists individuals in adjusting to work routine and guides them towards correcting inappropriate work related behavior in order to develop in the individual good basic work habits and job skills.
  • Attends weekly meetings, reports progress of individuals in work program based on observations and interaction, reports on work availability in order to provide information to aid the professional rehabilitation staff.
  • Takes inventory of materials, ships and receives materials, lifts and carries objects of various sizes and weights and signs for materials received.
  • Maintains and prepares necessary reports of a routine nature such as individual work hours and production for the day.

Experience

Two years of experience working with mentally, emotionally or physically handicapped individuals.

<b>KNOWLEDGE: </b>

Some knowledge of the problems that may be encountered in guiding and working with the emotionally, mentally and/or physically handicapped individuals in a light industrial or sheltered workshop environment.

Basic knowledge of the standard tools, methods, practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions encountered in a light manufacturing, assembly and packaging operation.

<b>ABILITY: </b>

Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. Communication may include such forms as American Sign Language or Braille.

Ability to give needed advice and assistance to mentally, emotionally and/or handicapped individuals.

Ability to work harmoniously with people of varying degrees of mental and physical handicaps while understanding the nature and limitations of workshop individuals.

Ability to use tact, sound judgment and courtesy in dealing with individuals with a variety of physical and mental disorders.

Ability to layout and prepare equipment and supplies and to make minor repairs to equipment.

Ability to observe, identify and report the difficulties and problems of individuals to professional staff.

Ability to maintain neat, accurate and legible records.
