Definition
Under direction, supervises a vehicle towing, storage and auction operation; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Supervises employees involved in towing vehicles damaged by accident, stalled, or ticketed by police for traffic violations.
- Oversees the security of vehicles parked in the lot.
- Collects fees for the release of vehicles to owners.
- Supervises the search and seizure of contraband prior to vehicles auction.
- Prepares lists of vehicles to be auctioned.
- Reviews auction advertisement for accuracy.
- Conducts auctions, secures bids, and collects and records monies received.
- Maintains records of vehicles towed, released, or sold at auction, and of towing, storage, and release fees.
- Authorizes the release of vehicles.
- Prepares maintenance and testing schedules for all tow trucks.
- Prepares reports.
- Contacts appropriate agency to identify vehicle owner.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Five (5) years of experience in the towing, storage, and/or auctioning of motor vehicles.
License
Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the procedures used to operate a tow truck.
- Knowledge of vehicle security methods used in a parking facility.
- Ability to operate a tow truck.
- Ability to conduct auctions, secure bids and collects monies.
- Ability to provide assignments and instructions to staff.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and distribute equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records of personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
