Definition
Under direction, supervises and works with employees involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of varied types of piping systems, motors, pumps, valves, metering devices and equipment in a water treatment plant; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Supervises and works with employees doing repair and maintenance of alum and lime feeders, chemical feed machines, chlorinators, injectors, water pumps, filters, flowmeters, and other mechanical equipment comprising the deep well pumps and the water plants.
- Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses needed tools, equipment, materials and supplies.
- Supervises the installation, repairing and rebuilding of hydraulic valves, cylinders, automatic pilot and control valves, and water and air regulators; the installation of roller bearing in floculator arms, and the installation and maintenance of gear reduction drives.
- May operate a lathe, drill press, milling machine, shaper, grinder, or electric hammer and compressor.
- May do brazing, cutting and arc welding when necessary.
- Keeps needed records of repairs made, time spent and costs involved.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Five (5) years of varied experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of varied types of piping systems, motors, pumps, valves, and metering devices.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems, procedures, and methods used in adjustment, operation, and maintenance of water treatment plant equipment and machinery.
- Knowledge of the varied equipment, materials, and supplies used in these processes.
- Knowledge of the safety precautions to be observed.
- Knowledge of supervisory techniques.
- Ability to apply technical training.
- Ability to communicate technical knowledge to persons supervised.
- Ability to work along with subordinates in difficult phases of job.
- Ability to follow established procedures, standards, and specifications.
- Ability to determine work to be accomplished.
- Ability to issue assignments, and to train and evaluate subordinate personnel.
- Ability to safeguard and store needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
