Definition

Under direction, plans, directs and supervises staff engaged in work activities involving the repair and maintenance of bridges; does other related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Plans, directs and supervises bridge maintenance and repair programs, projects, activities, and staff
  • Oversees and assures the quantity and quality of workflow by directing adherence to approved methods and procedures
  • Evaluates and monitors program operations, procedures and activities; recommends improvements and modifications; prepares various reports on operations and activities
  • Assesses personnel, material and equipment needs
  • Supervises, schedules and assigns work activities
  • Inspects work sites to evaluate job performance and equipment utilization
  • Participates in budget preparation and administration; prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations; monitors and controls expenditures
  • Prepares and checks specifications for bids, supplies and equipment
  • Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and responsible for employee evaluations and effectively recommending the hiring, promoting and/or disciplining of employees
  • Supervises the maintenance of essential records and files
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units

Experience

Five (5) years of experience in work involving the construction, repair and/or maintenance of bridges, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the operating procedures used in erecting rigging and scaffolding
  • Knowledge of methods used in replacing stringers, deck planks, pilings, and caps
  • Knowledge of methods used in repairing fenders
  • Knowledge of methods used in driving piles
  • Knowledge of methods used in building bulkheads
  • Knowledge of methods used in replacing worn out sheathing, whalers, and piles
  • Knowledge of methods used in repairing guard fences and foundations
  • Knowledge of methods used in cleaning joints and cutting the ends of bridge of clearance
  • Knowledge of methods used in printing bridge guard fences
  • Knowledge of methods used in replacing asphalt, wood, and granite blocks
  • Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques
  • Ability to effectively direct and supervise bridge maintenance and repair programs, projects and activities
  • Ability to assess and analyze bridge repair and maintenance problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods
  • Ability to supervise staff responsible for performing bridge maintenance and repair work, and evaluate the performance of their work
  • Ability to supervise the use of equipment, materials and supplies used in the repair and maintenance of bridges
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and others involved in the work of the unit
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication
