Definition
Under direction, assists in supervising personnel engaged in the building, repair, and maintenance of bridges and other structures; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Assists in supervising the construction, maintenance, and repair programs of bridges.
- Participates in the preparation of budget estimates.
- Prepares and checks specifications for bids, supplies, and equipment.
- Assists in assigning, supervising and directing the work of foreman, maintenance men, laborers and other employees in general bridge construction, maintenance and repair operations.
Experience
Four years of experience in work involving the construction and/or maintenance of bridges, two years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
<b>KNOWLEDGE</b>
Wide knowledge of the operating procedures used in erecting, rigging, scaffolding, replacing stringers, deck planks, pilings and caps.
Of repairing fenders, driving piles, and building bulkheads.
Of replacing worn out sheathing, whalers, and piles.
Of repairing guard fences.
Of repairing foundations damaged by scourge, and in general bridge house repairs.
Of cleaning joints and cutting the ends of bridge for clearance.
Of painting bridge guard fences and replacing asphalt, wood, and granite blocks.
Of the problems involved in giving suitable assignments and instructions to individuals and groups and supervising their work.
Of the establishment and the maintenance of needed records and files.
<b>ABILITIES</b>
Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. Communication may include such forms as American sign language or braille.
Ability to analyze bridge construction, maintenance, and repair problems.
To organize assigned bridge maintenance work, and develop effective work methods.
To give suitable assignments and instructions to groups and individuals, provide them with needed advice and assistance when difficult and unusual problems arise, and check their work to see that proper procedures are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship and output are maintained, and that desired objectives are achieved.
To obtain, store, record, safeguard, distribute, and supervise the proper use of needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
To prepare reports itemizing the amount of time, materials, and equipment used on each project which has been completed.
To report accidents involving county property and personnel, and to keep simple records.
