Definition
Under direction, assists in the supervision and works with a group of carpenters engaged in a variety of carpentry tasks; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Inspects, analyzes, and assists in the determination of the carpentry work to be done.
- Develops effective work plans.
- Assists in providing suitable assignments and instructions to subordinates and assists in supervising their work.
- Estimates amounts of material and equipment needed for various types of carpentry construction and maintenance work and lays out the work.
- Assists in supervising and performs the work involved in repairing, installing, and/or making windows, frames, sashes, screens, doors, interior or exterior trim, flooring, siding and sheeting, stairs, railings, porches, and roofing.
- Repairs and installs cabinets, clothes racks, wardrobes, furniture, and signs, installs cribbing and forms for concrete and scaffolds.
- Sets and operates a variety of woodworking machines.
- Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, and specifications according to building codes or approved trade practices.
- Prepares suitable reports, keeps needed records.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Four (4) years of experience in carpentry work involving a variety of layout, construction, and maintenance tasks.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of problems, procedures, and methods used to inspect, analyze, and determine the carpentry work to be done.
- Knowledge of carpentry tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety precautions used in carpentry work.
- Ability to analyze carpentry problems.
- Ability to perform carpentry work.
- Ability to organize assigned work methods.
- Ability to provide suitable assignments and instructions.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
