Supervising Painter is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Definition
Under direction, supervises and works with a group of painters engaged in a variety of painting tasks; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Inspects, analyzes, and determines the painting work to be done.
- Plans, organizes, and assigns work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of employees.
- Provides assignments and instructions to subordinates and supervises their work.
- Paints the exterior and interior of buildings.
- Paints a variety of structures.
- Mixes paint to proper consistency, matching of colors, and adding coloring.
- Uses brushes and spray gun to apply paint.
- Erects working scaffold and rigging.
- Removes old paint by applying liquid paint remover, heating surface with a blowtorch and scraping off paint.
- Establishes and maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Five (5) years of experience in general painting work including rigging and scaffolding.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems and procedures of inspecting and planning painting work.
- Knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods used to prepare surfaces for painting.
- Knowledge of establishing and maintaining records and files.
- Ability to analyze painting problems.
- Ability to provide assignments and instructions to staff and supervise their work performance.
- Ability to erect and maintain scaffolding and rigging in a safe condition.
- Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
- Ability to maintain records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
