Definition
Under direction, supervises employees engaged in welding and performs various tasks in electric arc and oxyacetylene welding and cutting; maintains, repairs, rebuilds, and fabricates metal equipment and tools; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accord with approved trade practices; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Supervises employees engaged in welding.
- Operates various electric resistance welding machines (spot, seam, and flash) or uses a manual gas torch welding process to join parts or components.
- Determines welding techniques and machine settings to be used.
- Assembles and sets up parts to be welded according to resistance welding control charts, specifications, and shop practices.
- Welds metal parts/structures that vary in size, shape, and thickness that require a multiple welding pass, and welds dissimilar and commonly used metals and alloys.
- Controls metals and determines welding techniques to use for preventing distortion, burning, or other defects when welding in hard to reach places that must meet close tolerance, strength, and other requirements to ensure evenness of fit and smoothness of contour.
- Welds materials in positions such as flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead to perform the required welds.
- Devises special jigs/fixtures to hold parts to be welded using techniques such as preheating, heat sinks, and stress relieving to maintain specified dimensions to prevent distortion or burning of parts.
- Controls torch or arc and positioning/feeding of welding rod or electrode when welding manually to prevent burning of base metals, complete fusing of base filler metals, and to obtain desired penetration and weld head dimensions.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Develops effective work plans, gives suitable assignments and instructions to subordinates and supervises their work.
- Supervises the maintenance and uses of equipment, materials, and supplies and prepares itemized work order in accord with established policy/procedures.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Requirements
<b>TRAINING:</b>
Successful completion of a two (2) year training program in basic welding operations.
Experience
Three (3) years of varied experience in welding which shall have included oxyacetylene and arc welding and cutting.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of trade procedures such as brazing, soldering, flame and arc-cutting, surface hardening, annealing, and metal spraying.
- Knowledge of electric, gas, and other welding processing, repairing, modifying, rebuilding, and assembling of metal and alloy parts, equipment, systems, and structures.
- Knowledge of welding standards and how metals/alloys react to different welding processes and techniques.
- Ability to supervise assigned staff and plan, organize, and implement projects within the unit.
- Ability to understand and apply craft processes of welding.
- Ability to visualize completed fused work piece from layouts and diagrams.
- Ability to see differences in shapes of objects to penetrate metal piece accurately and fill in cracks.
- Ability to see differences in length of lines to maintain proper arc.
- Ability to coordinate welding along vertical, horizontal, or overhead lines maintaining speed and depth of fusion.
- Ability to maintain and use equipment, material, and supplies.
- Ability to make welds that require complete penetration and fusion of base and filler metals when welding in hard to reach places.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
