Definition

Under direction supervises and performs work involved in maintenance, repair, adjustment, and operation of electrically powered, industrial type mechanical equipment/machinery used in shredding and compacting various solid waste material; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Supervises and leads activities of assigned employees so as to attain optimum results in terms of cost, quality, and group morale.
• Reviews employees' performance and determines assignments which will utilize each to his/her best ability and achieve objectives of low cost and good quality of work output.
• Provides instruction and developmental opportunities for personnel.
• Communicates agency policies and other pertinent information.
• Establishes and maintains standards of job performance for subordinates, and inspires/requires good performance.
• Takes appropriate action when employees excel, meet, or fall below established standards.
• Applies sound supervisory/leadership skills in dealings with employees in areas such as interviewing, transferring, and disciplining.
• Carries out agency policies/programs as they apply to the unit.
• Performs special assignments as directed by supervisor.

• Supervises staff in performance of clean-up operations to ensure compliance with sanitary standards.
• Observes various temperature and pressure gauges to ensure machines are operating correctly.
• When malfunctions occur, analyzes situation, diagnoses problems, and takes proper action so that needed repairs are made with minimum delay.
• Coordinates the clean-up, maintenance, and shredding schedules.
• Locates and determines electrical malfunctions using instruments such as voltmeters, ammeters, and resistance testers to locate malfunction.
• Corrects malfunctions by using various methods such as cleaning/repairing motors, contact leads, or other parts.
• Uses hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, and wrenches to complete repairs.
• Disassembles, removes, replaces, and reassembles defective parts/components of machinery or mechanical equipment such as belt systems, motors, and pumps.
• Uses diagrams, operating manuals, manufacturers= specifications, hand and power tools, hoists, and other helpers to make repairs.
• Adjusts mechanical parts of machinery by tightening/loosening components such as drums or conveyors to provide for proper operation of mechanisms.
• Installs electrical control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels using screws or bolts, hand and power tools to fasten them in place.
• Performs regularly scheduled maintenance work including greasing or operating special cleaning equipment to keep machinery in good working condition.
• Cleans and lubricates shafts, pulleys, gears, and bearings using rags, brushes, grease gun, and oil cans to perform routine maintenance on machines.
• Starts and stops devices to test performance of machinery and electrical equipment.
• Preforms visual inspection on components, and makes minor adjustments to hydraulic equipment to ensure maintenance of proper pressure settings.
• Performs varied visual inspections of machinery components/parts to detect cracks, corrosion, or need for repairs.
• May operate machinery or supervise workers engaged in operating machinery to convey, crush, and separate bulk materials such as refuse or waste to produce a more manageable product.
• Presses button to start equipment.
• Pulls levers or starts vibrating screens to separate material according to size.
• Observes flow of materials and operation of machinery to detect jams or malfunctions.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial size electromechanical equipment or machinery.

License

Appointees will required to possess a driver's licences valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of electrical and mechanical inspection techniques.
• Knowledge of procedures for use of test equipment.
• Knowledge of equipment and techniques used to install, maintain, adjust, and repair electrical systems and circuits and electromechanical equipment.
• Knowledge of theories and principals of electricity, wiring, motors, and generators.
• Knowledge of the use, maintenance, and repair requirements of a variety of mechanical devices and components such as motors, gears, pumps, bearings, and hoists.
• Knowledge of procedures involved in processing solid waste material.
• Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment/machinery used in processing varied materials.
• Knowledge of procedures for maintaining working and surrounding areas properly cleaned.
• Skill in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems with components such as switches, relays, generators, motors, and voltage regulators.
• Ability to read and use technical manuals, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides for the assembly and layout of electrical and electromechanical equipment.
• Ability to use a variety of testing/repairing equipment for electrical systems such as hand tools, voltmeters, and ohmmeters.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy items of up to 40 pounds.
• Ability to use jacks, hoists, or helpers in lifting heavier items.
• Ability to work on parts and systems which are dirty and greasy.
• Ability to follow established safety procedures.
• Ability to wear required safety equipment such as protective eyeglasses, ear devices, hard hats, and gloves.
• Ability to give assignments and instructions to subordinates.
• Ability to provide subordinates with advice and assistance when difficult and unusual problems arise.
• Ability to check work of subordinates to ensure that proper procedures are followed.
• Ability to review work of subordinates to ensure the maintenance of reasonable standards of output and achievement of desired objectives.
• Ability to maintain records and files.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
