Supervisor Greenhouse is a local service title. Definition

Under the direction, supervises and works with a group of employees engaged in tasks involved in growing varied types of plants in and about a greenhouse, does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Supervises and works with a group of employees who screen, sterilize, and mix compost soil and place it in flats.
  • Provides assignments and instructions to individuals and groups and supervises the performance of their work.
  • Seeds wood flats with flower and vegetable seeds.
  • Pots seedlings in flats and pots placed in cold frames.
  • Plants stock plants in the fields, propagates flowers for cutting, forces bulbs.
  • Pots plants, transplants plants and grows bedding plants for indoor and outdoor use.
  • Mows lawns, trims shrubs, tends flowerbeds, maintains the grounds.
  • Supervises planting, cultivating, weeding, and harvesting of vegetables.
  • Trims, transplants, and sprays trees.
  • Drives trucks and cars for plowing snow, hauling ashes and sand, and trucking work around the garden.
  • Maintains greenhouses, equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in the growing of plants under greenhouse conditions.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a drive's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the preparation of soil for growing plants.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in growing greenhouse plants.
  • Knowledge of the problems involved in providing assignments and instructions to others and supervising the performance of their work.
  • Knowledge of the types of plants and flowers used for cutting purposes.
  • Knowledge of the uses of fertilizers and manure.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to pot plants in flats.
  • Knowledge of the methods used in forcing flowers.
  • Knowledge of the methods and equipment used to mow lawns, trim shrubs, tend flowerbeds, and cleaning up around the grounds.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to trim, transplant and spray trees.
  • Ability to provide assignments and instructions to others.
  • Ability to prepare soil to grow plants.
  • Ability to utilize tools and equipment to grow greenhouse plants.
  • Ability to grow various plants including flowers, used for cutting purposes.
  • Ability to use fertilizers and manures.
  • Ability to force bulbs, pot plants, and transplant seedlings and plants.
  • Ability to supervise planting, cultivating, weeding and harvesting of vegetables.
  • Ability to trim, transplant, and spray trees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain files and records.
  • Ability to analyze the problems related to the operation of greenhouses.
  • Ability to organize work, and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
