Definition
Under direction, has charge of work involved in installation, construction, repair, rebuilding, and maintenance of electric lines and related equipment which involves the general and comprehensive responsibility for its efficient functioning; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Directs and coordinates activities of workers engaged in installation, maintenance, repair, and expansion of the electric line system.
- Analyzes trends, such as population and industrial growth of area being served, to determine adequacy of current equipment and to project community demands for future usage of the system.
- Develops plans to meet and serve expanding community needs and to avoid obsolescence.
- Plans methods and sequences of operations to facilitate additions/modifications to the system.
- Directs activities of staff and oversees installation, maintenance, and repair of the electric line system.
- Inspects field projects to confirm conformance to specifications.
- Confers with administrative/technical personnel and personnel of other organizations to coordinate activities.
- Evaluates new developments in materials/tools/equipment to recommend or deny purchase.
- Prepares budget estimates based on anticipated needs.
- Prepares specifications for equipment to be purchased, covering types, amount, quality, and in some cases operating characteristics.
- Helps to determine factors that cause unnecessarily high costs and delays in making needed repairs.
- Receives complaints and requests for repairs and takes proper remedial action.
- Develops plans for maintaining uninterrupted service on the entire electric line system.
- Supervises the obtaining, storage, safeguarding, and proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Supervises the establishment/maintenance of records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Five (5) years of experience in installing and repairing power lines and/or telephone or telegraph lines, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of standards of construction for aerial circuits in the concerned jurisdiction.
- Knowledge of financial, personal, and technical problems involved in developing/executing the work program for installation, repair, maintenance, and construction of an electric line system.
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, and standards covering installation/maintenance of aerial circuits.
- Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code.
- Knowledge of looping out branch circuits.
- Knowledge of tracing out and keeping track of circuits on overhead line construction and of problems and accepted procedures involved in installing, repairing, and maintaining high voltage lines/equipment.
- Ability to direct installation, operation, and maintenance of the electric line system which involves the general and comprehensive responsibility for its efficient functioning.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others concerned with or having an interest in the electric line system.
- Ability to give assignments and instructions to assigned employees.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to supervise the establishment/maintenance of records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
