Definition

Under direction, takes the lead over other workers engaged in the reading of water meters and/or performs the more difficult and responsible tasks involved in the reading of water meters; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Takes the lead over other Water Meter Readers in the performance of their duties and provides them with guidance and instructions.
• Walks or drives motor vehicles in order to accomplish assigned readings in a designated area or route.
• Reads water meters periodically.
• Records readings of various dials on provided forms to serve as a basis for measuring water consumption.
• Inspects water meter to see whether the seal is intact, whether meter is damaged, or unauthorized connections or tampering has occurred and notes significant observations on forms for necessary action by service personnel.
• If there are water leaks, notifies the proper persons.
• Makes special readings when complaints are received regarding abnormal water consumption and records reasons for fluctuations.
• Answers inquires and gives information concerning water meter readings, the manner of making computations for water consumption, and the water distribution system.
• Keep legible and accurate records.
• Informs business office of meter readings for billing purposes.
• May turn off water service for non-payment of charges or may turn service on for new occupants if premises.
• When reading industrial meters, makes onsite calculations of consumption to determine if consumption is in-line with past readings of usage.
• Where usage readings vary considerably, meets with company represenatives to determine reasons for discrepancies. Investigates the causes, and takes remedial action when necessary.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in the readings repair, or in the readings, repair, or installation of water meters.

One (1) year of experience in work involving the installation of water meter equipment.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, it necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
