Definition
Under direction, has charge of and supervises work of employees engaged in street cleaning, refuse collection and disposal, and snow removal; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Prepares work plans, establishes working procedures for, and supervises refuse collection, manual street cleaning, operation of motor brooms, and disposal area functions.
- Directs snow and ice control in winter including salting, sanding, plowing, and removal.
- Develops effective work plans.
- Prepares or supervises preparation of routes for subordinates.
- Receives and investigates complaints from the public.
- Ensures proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Gives assignments and instructions to subordinates.
- Prepares reports.
- Supervises establishment and maintenance of records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Five (5) years of supervisory experience in work involving the collection and disposal of solid waste material.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of processes used in collecting municipal refuse.
- Knowledge of methods of routing trucks.
- Knowledge of various types of equipment and tools used in refuse collection.
- Knowledge of methods used in establishing and maintaining records and files.
- Ability to direct subordinates and provide them with needed advice and assistance when difficult and unusual problems arise.
- Ability to check subordinates work to see that proper procedures are followed, reasonable standards of workmanship and output are maintained, and desired objectives are achieved.
- Ability to handle complaints properly and effectively.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
