Supervising Parking Enforcement Officer is a local service title. Definition

Under direction, supervises employees engaged in patrolling designated areas and issuing summonses to motor vehicles in order to enforce State, county or municipal statutes, resolutions, ordinances or regulations related to the parking of motor vehicles within the municipality; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Provides assignments and instructions to parking violation officers and supervises the performance of their work.
  • Checks the condition of parking meters and informs those responsible for repair of any meter malfunctions.
  • Notifies police personnel of conditions that may warrant attention.
  • Provides testimony in court related to issued summonses.
  • Writes summonses.
  • Prepares and supervises the preparation of reports.
  • Answers complaints from the public.
  • Supervises the maintenance of records and files.
  • May operate a motorcycle, motorized scooter or other motor vehicle in the performance of duties.
  • May supervise arrangements for towing vehicles parked, stored or abandoned in the municipality in violation of statute, resolution, ordinance or regulation.
  • May supervise the collection costs of towing and storage from vehicle owner or owner's agent.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in enforcing parking ordinances.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the problems and procedures involved in parking violations.
  • Knowledge of keeping records and reports of conditions noted and actions taken.
  • Ability to provide suitable assignments and instructions to staff and supervise the performance of their work.
  • Ability to provide testimony in court.
  • Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to supervise the maintenance of records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
