Definition

Under direction performs a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks involved in masonry, plastering, carpentry, painting, plumbing, steamfitting, sheet metal, electrical, glazing, mechanical, and/or other types of maintenance work; does related work.

Examples of work

  • Plans and supervises various municipal beach activities.
  • Supervises subordinates in cleaning, maintaining, and repairing beach buildings and equipment.
  • Supervises the work of lifeguards and tests and instructs them in life saving and first aid techniques.
  • Assigns beach patrol personnel to their respective work areas.
  • Supervises patrol zones through daily inspections.
  • Inspects work to see that desired objectives are achieved including the prevention of the use of unguarded beaches and other abuses of beach privileges.
  • Obtains and supervises the storing and safeguarding of needed beach equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Supervises and performs the work involved in the repair and maintenance of all beach patrol equipment, lifeboats, and stands.
  • Prepares time sheets, payrolls, and needed reports.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Erects simple forms, mixes cement and aggregates, pours same, and does the finishing work involved in concrete structures.
  • Patches and repairs brick and concrete structures.
  • Repairs damaged plastered walls and ceilings.
  • Spackles, and paints interior and exterior metal, wood, and masonry surfaces.
  • Repairs plumbing stoppages and repairs leaks in copper, soil, and iron pipe.
  • Replaces washers and gaskets, and makes general service repairs.
  • Does general sheet metal work involved in repairing roofs, drainboards, and rainspouts.
  • Replaces light bulbs, fuses, wall plates, fixture cords, and switches.
  • Replaces broken glass and reputties.
  • Changes lubricants, refuels, and does light maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
  • Cleans tools and equipment.
  • Keeps simple records.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance of beaches and in the cleaning and repair of beach structures and beach related equipment, two (2) years of which must also have included experience as a lifeguard and of that two (2) years, one (1) must have been in a supervisory capacity.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the processes used in cleaning, maintaining, and repairing of beach buildings, beaches, lifeboats, lifeguard stands, and buoys.
  • Knowledge of the varied equipment, materials, and supplies used in these processes.
  • Knowledge of the proper method of caring and storing of all types of beach equipment.
  • Knowledge of life saving methods, first aid, and rowing of a lifeboat.
  • Ability to direct subordinates in effective procedures used in performing beach safety duties and repair of beach equipment.
  • Ability to organize assigned work and develops methods.
  • Ability to make inspections of equipment.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to keep records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
