Definition
Under direction, is responsible for one or more major units of laundry work, or takes the lead over a small group of employees, patients, or inmates engaged in sorting, checking, ironing, pressing, or operating laundry equipment, or takes the lead over a small group of employees, patients, or inmates in sorting and checking clean clothing and linen in and/or out of linen rooms; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Operates and/or takes the lead in the operation of one or more commercial type laundry machines including washers, extractors, tumblers, dryers, presses, irons, and other equipment.
- Ensures that appropriate amounts of soaps, detergents, bleaches, and other washing and cleaning compounds are measured and used properly.
- Ensures that wash and rinse waters are maintained at proper temperature.
- Prepares laundry chemical compounds and mixtures.
- Receives, sorts, inspects, classifies, folds, counts, and otherwise checks items of clothing and other linen sent to the laundry and/or linen rooms.
- Assigns and instructs laundry employees, linen room employees, and patients or inmates, and oversees the performance of their work.
- Performs minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment.
- Maintains records.
- In the Department of Human Services and/or Corrections, may be required to undergo fire training classes.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in the various processes of a large scale institutional or commercial laundry or linen room.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of procedures, materials, and equipment used in large scale laundries and/or linen rooms.
- Knowledge of the use of laundry soaps, detergents, bleaches, and other compounds.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of washers, dryers, presses, and other laundry equipment.
- Knowledge of the preparation and use of various types of laundering compounds and solutions.
- Ability to operate and supervise the operation of commercial type laundry equipment including washers, extractors, tumblers, and presses.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment.
- Ability to operate and supervise the operation of assigned units of laundry equipment.
- Ability to select the appropriate washing soaps and detergents, bleaches, rinses, and water temperatures for specific types of laundry.
- Ability to assign and supervise laundry employees and patients or inmates assigned to the laundry and/or linen rooms.
- Ability to instruct employees in the inspecting, working, sorting, checking, folding, and distribution of laundry.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
