Investigator Elections is a local service title. Definition
Under direction, does varied types of field and office work involved in investigating violations of the election law; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Investigates complaints and suspicions concerning persons not properly registered or entitled to vote
- Investigates the residence of persons whose sample ballots have been returned to establish the continued residence or removal of registrants from the voting rolls.
- Investigates newly registered voters, persons convicted of a crime, and persons who have moved.
- Removes, spot checks, and files registrations from registry binders.
- Makes house to house canvass of registered voters to ascertain if they are properly registered and if any changes in status have occurred that might affect an election.
- Makes physical inspections of election premises with regard to the type of building and facilities that are available and makes recommendations about improvements.
- Assists citizens who are physically unable to register by themselves at their local municipal offices.
- Inspects and coordinates activities of authorized temporary registration sites.
- Conducts investigations to verify the death of registered voters in order to have their names removed from voter registration rolls.
- Investigates voter registration applications for accuracy.
- Investigates absentee ballot requests to determine if the applicant is entitled to a ballot based on residency requirement.
- Investigates cases of alleged election fraud.
- Answers questions and reviews the state election law to determine if complaints are a violation of the law.
- Appears in court for testimony in contested cases.
- Prepares reports containing finding, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency.
Experience
Two years of experience that involved either (1) investigations in connection with the prosecution or defense of civil or criminal cases; or (2) investigations concerning compliance with or violations of statutory laws, rules, and regulations; or (3) criminal investigations requiring the use of a variety of investigatory methods and techniques; or (4) securing and verifying information and making determinations and recommendations pertaining to such matters as the eligibility or qualifications of applicants for loans, insurance, credit, employment, entitlement to cash awards or financial benefits, and the adjustment and settlement of insurance claims; or (5) other types of investigations which involved the collection of facts, and obtaining information by observing conditions, examining records, interviewing individuals and preparing investigative reports of findings.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
