Definition
Under direction, advises tenants regarding landlord/tenant laws, rent regulation ordinances, and other regulations impacting tenant rights; does other related duties and typing as required.
Examples of work
- (The following examples of work are to be performed utilizing English and Spanish as required.)
- Advises tenants of their rights under local and state laws, and provides referrals to various agencies.
- Distributes tenants-right literature and apprises them of new rules, laws, and ordinances.
- Explains lease provision, changing terms of a lease, permissible rent increases and payment requirements, termination of leases, and housing authority policies/regulations as appropriate.
- Researches pending ordinance changes regarding landlord/tenant matters.
- Conducts educational workshops for tenants.
- Assists in establishing tenant organizations.
- Attends tenant meeting and provides assistance with landlord negotiations.
- Provides information regarding consumer protection agencies, community resources, tenant associations, or other resources when required.
- Maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related unit.
Experience
One (1) year of experience providing advice and assistance to tenants or in tenant/landlord relations.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems encountered by tenants in a public housing environment.
- Knowledge of the types of community resources agencies whose services are likely to be needed by tenants in a public housing environment.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply laws, rules and regulations.
- Ability to types documents from varied forms of copy.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with tenants and landlord.
- Ability to provide information and advice to tenants.
- Ability to explain laws, regulations, lease provisions and other regulations to tenants.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English and Spanish sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
