Definition

Under direction, organizes, develops, coordinates, implements and administers a juvenile diversion and treatment program; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Develops, organizes, coordinates, implements, and administers a juvenile diversion and treatment program.
• Plans and enforces program procedures, policies, and goals.
• Confers with psychiatrists and other professional personnel relevant to client's total treatment.
• Interviews clients, their families, and other concerned persons, and obtains data needed for diagnosis and treatment.
• Provides individual and/or family treatment.
• Provides psychiatric and social services as needed.
• May evaluate new referrals, make initial diagnoses, and prepare treatment plans.
• Coordinates treatment plans and discusses treatment progress.
• Maintains patient records and progress reports.
• May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Possession of a Master's degree in social work from an accredited college.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in psychiatric social work relating to individual, family, or group counseling, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity involving individual, family or group counseling.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of approved psychiatric social work practices.
• Knowledge of the administrative and related problems encountered in applying the concepts, methods, and procedures of present day social work.
• Knowledge of the problems encountered in collecting and analyzing information needed to develop a treatment plan, drawing sound conclusions, and developing appropriate actions.
• Knowledge of social case work methods and terminology.
• Ability to plan and carry out individual programs and supervision of psychiatric social work for clients.
• Ability to give suitable assignments and instruction to assigned employees.
• Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with professional and sub-professional personnel.
• Ability to prepare written and oral reports.
• Ability to supervise the maintenance of related records and files.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Note

A graduate field placement in social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education may be substituted for one (1) year of the non-supervisory experience indicated.
