Definition
Under direction, performs routine work associated with installing, operating, maintaining, repairing, and monitoring resource recovery facility utilities systems including landfill gas extraction, collection, transmission, treatment and emission; water supply, treatment, storage and distribution; wastewater collection, conveyance, treatment and disposal; solid waste and wastewater sludge processing and all related process by-product(s) management; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Assists in activating, deactivating, and adjusting equipment such as pumps, blowers, compressors, conveyors, chemical and process additive feeders, heat exchangers, sludge concentrating, dewatering and composting equipment, membrane, mixed media and bio-filtration systems, and disinfection used in various physical, chemical, and biological resource recovery utilities systems.
- Assists in adjusting valves and instruments used in the isolation and control of resource recovery utilities systems.
- Assists in operating equipment such as hoists, rodders, jetters, and other small mechanical equipment; operates forklifts and other motor vehicles when required; checks, services, and assists in making minor and emergency adjustments and repairs in the field and in the repair shop; occasionally or incidentally performs manual and unskilled work.
- Reads charts, flowmeters, gauges, and other instruments to monitor process/equipment status and to detect process/equipment malfunctions and notifies supervisory staff.
- Assists in inspecting plant and equipment for malfunctions and needed repairs, performs minor repairs, stabilizes irregular conditions, and performs lubrications.
- Assists during more complex equipment maintenance activities.
- Collects resource recovery facility environmental monitoring and process control samples and may maintain and prepare equipment, instruments, and supplies needed to perform routine tests on collected samples.
- Makes entries into plant logbooks, completes process reports, maintains necessary files and records.
- Assists in maintaining the working area in a clean and sanitary condition, including using hoses, brushes, chemicals and detergents, scrubbing process tanks, walkways, and other areas and equipment.
- As necessary, participates in cleaning or custodial duties, including painting inside and outside the plant.
- May cut grass, rake leaves, and remove snow.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in the operation, adjustment, regulation, repair, and maintenance of pumps valves, motors, and other electrical and mechanical equipment used in a resource recovery facility.
License
In accordance with NJAC 7:10A-1.10, applicants may be required to possess a current and valid Wastewater System Operator's license of the appropriate grade and type, issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the proper procedures used in operating, adjusting, and regulating resource recovery facility pumps, valves, and related processes and equipment.
- Ability to skillfully and safely operate and analyze problems involving resource recovery facility utilities process and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to organize and carryout routine work projects.
- Ability to properly utilize hand and power tools and equipment.
- Ability to learn quickly from explanations and demonstrations and understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to check, clean, and service equipment, determine whether it is operating properly, make minor and emergency repairs, and keep necessary records.
- Ability to understand the significance of various process instruments.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
