Definition

Under the direction of a supervisory official, supervises and performs various tasks involving the operation of closed circuit security cameras and/or other security system equipment; Recognizes and responds to emergency, criminal and/or disorderly activities and may make recordings of these events; Supervises staff involved in monitoring and operating security equipment; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Supervises and coordinates security activities of the unit.
  • May conduct training classes.
  • Provides technical advice to staff, peers and management.
  • Plans, organizes, and assigns the work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and disciplining of subordinates.
  • Supervises the inspection of security equipment at beginning and end of shift to ensure the equipment is in working order.
  • Notes and reports conditions which constitute a danger and/or hazard and takes the appropriate action to report such events to the supervisor and/or police department.
  • Takes alternative/corrective action when system errors occur and report malfunctions to management.
  • Requests emergency police, fire and medical units to areas where needed.
  • Assists law enforcement by viewing locations where police units are dispatched to ascertain if there are any dangers present before the police units arrive.
  • Keeps all viewed events confidential unless instructed otherwise by a supervisor or administrator.
  • Supervises work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employee evaluation and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
  • Advises management on personnel issues.
  • Appears and testifies in court as required.
  • Uses desktop computers to enter required reports.
  • Supervises the use of security equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • May operate closed circuit television (CCTV) security cameras and other related security equipment.
  • Supervises the preparation of reports.
  • In a CCTV security unit, supervises various tasks associated with the operation of closed circuit television security cameras and the recording of criminal, disorderly and emergency events.
  • In a CCTV security unit, obtains images (close-ups) of individuals and vehicles involved in emergency and law enforcement related incidents using the pan, tilt and zoom abilities of the security cameras.
  • In a CCTV security unit, makes copies of images to CD/DVD/VHS or makes still prints as needed or required by police, prosecutor, or city law department.
  • In a CCTV security unit, sends images to the police Central Communications Bureau as required or directed by his/her supervisor.
  • In a CCTV security unit, limits CTV Control Room access to authorized individuals.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information system used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in the operation of security system monitoring equipment.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

<b>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS</b>:

Appointees may be required to complete a training course that covers the equipment they will be responsible for operating (Supervisors Control Station). In addition, the appointee will be trained on how to recognize and react to various types of situations.

  • Knowledge of security monitoring procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of information required for documenting emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of security procedures involved in the dissemination of information.
  • Knowledge of the geography and/or street locations of the community served.
  • Ability to recognize emergency situations, criminal activity, disorderly or abnormal behavior and respond/react accordingly.
  • Ability to analyze problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to give assignments and instructions to employees.
  • Ability to train employees and others in the performance of their assignments.
  • Ability to effectively evaluate the performance of employees.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information obtained.
  • Ability to read and discern visual images on a television monitor.
  • Ability to testify accurately in a court of law.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and others involved in the work of the unit.
  • In a CCTV unit, ability to supervise security staff associated with the operation of closed circuit television security cameras and the recording of criminal, disorderly and emergency events.
  • In a CCTV unit, ability to send images to the Police Department's Central Communications Bureau.
  • In a CCTV unit, ability to use the recorders copy function to make VHS tapes and CD/DVD disks.
  • Ability to supervise the preparation of reports and the maintenance of records.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
