Definition
WATER SAMPLE COLLECTOR Under direction, performs the varied tasks involved in collecting water samples for various reservoirs and related bodies; does related work as required. Under close supervision, perform standardized basic tests and analyses to determine the amount or concentration of various substances found in water samples collected from potable water, wastewater, or other sources; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
Collects water samples at various reservoirs and streams and brings them into the laboratory for chemical analysis; checks general condition along various points as well as equipment; changes chlorine tanks and daily work sheets as required; treats reservoir with copper sulphate as needed; assist in the laboratory as needed. Performs basic chemical, physical, and bacteriological tests, and analysis on water samples from various sources. Arrange apparatus, instruments, and equipment. Adheres to safety practices, guidelines, and procedures in the laboratory. Reads test results and reports or explains elementary relationships which exist between various test values. Conducts simple qualitative tests of water for color, alkalinity/acidity, hardness, turbidity, and chlorine residual. Arranges laboratory equipment and prepares specimens for testing or microscopic examination. Prepares solutions and indicators by weighing, measuring, and mixing solid and liquid reagents; may heat and boil solutions. Prepares culture media from fresh and dehydrated materials by measuring, mixing, heating, and filtering. Maintains stock of media. Perform routine instrument and equipment repair and maintenance. Performs bacteriological examinations limited to standard and simple techniques not requiring specialized knowledge of the fields of bacteriology. Operates spectrophotometer for the analysis of parameters such as iron, nitrate, phosphorus, copper, and manganese. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Requirements
Ability to read and write English with facility. Some knowledge of a water system; of the problems and procedures involved in water pollution control. Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions; to learn quickly from oral and written instructions and from demonstrations; to make inspections of water service installations and make suitable recommendations as to findings; and to keep routine records. Good health and freedom from disabling physical and mental defects which would impair the proper performance of the required duties or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself or others. Experience
One (1) year of experience conducting standardized basic samples of chemical and/or bacteriological testing and analysis on water samples.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of methods and techniques used in operating basic laboratory equipment. Knowledge of safety precautions used to conduct chemical and microbiological analysis. Knowledge of the methods used to prepare simple stains, solutions, and culture media. Knowledge of the methods used to conduct standardized basic tests and analyses on water samples. Ability to test and identify various organic and inorganic compounds found in water samples. Ability to prepare solutions and indicators. Ability to interpret and apply information from laboratory reference manuals. Ability to set up and operate laboratory equipment. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
