Definition

Under direction of the Institution Fire Chief in one of the institutions under the jurisdiction of the Department of Human Services, drives and operates all fire apparatus and assists with varied types of fire fighting, training, and prevention work; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Assists in the direction of firefighters engaged in extinguishing fires; and in the handling of residents.
  • Drives the fire truck to the place of the fire and operates the water pumping and other equipment used in extinguishing fires.
  • Receives and transmits alarms.
  • Assists in organizing the institutional employees into a volunteer fire fighting force.
  • Conducts inspections of institutional buildings and grounds to identify and dispose of fire hazards, and to ensure compliance with fire codes and standards.
  • Conducts fire orientation classes and in service training drills.
  • Conducts daily inspections of all fire apparatus and equipment to ensure proper functioning and availability.
  • Services, or arranges to have serviced, fire apparatus, fire extinguishers and fire suppression systems as required.
  • Prepares reports of investigations of fire-related incidents; recommends corrective and preventive measures as appropriate.
  • Assists in developing plans and procedures to be followed in fire prevention and control work.
  • Assists in the conduct of investigations to determine the cause of fires.
  • Provides training in fire evacuation and prevention procedures.
  • Assists in training firefighters.
  • Assists in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.
  • Maintains essential records.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year experience as a career firefighter and/or in performing fire prevention work, or three (3) years of active experience in a volunteer fire unit.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the methods used to conduct investigations to determine the cause of fires.
  • Knowledge of the precautions to be taken in driving fire apparatus during fire emergencies.
  • Knowledge of the operation of the water pumping and other equipment used in extinguishing fires.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to organize and train a volunteer firefighting force in the proper use of fire fighting equipment and procedures, and to assign them to fire prevention and fire fighting duties.
  • Knowledge of the procedures involved to conduct physical inspections of fire protection equipment, buildings and grounds, and to ensure compliance with existing fire codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of the factors and situations which cause fire hazards.
  • Knowledge of the formulation and application of plans and procedures to be followed in institutional safety and fire prevention work.
  • Knowledge of the methods likely to be effective in fighting various types of fires.
  • Ability to drive a fire truck and operate fire apparatus and related equipment.
  • Ability to plan and conduct fire drills and fire control demonstrations.
  • Ability to organize the work of an assigned company of firefighters.
  • Ability to provide training.
  • Ability to comprehend, retain, and execute written and oral directions and to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and demonstrations.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and factual reports and to maintain essential records and files.
  • Ability to assign and instruct others in the fire fighting force and provide them with advice and assistance. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

CERTIFICATION

In accordance with NJAC 5:73-1.6(b), c & (d), effective February 17, 2000, applicants for this position must possess a valid Incident Management Level 1 Certification issued by the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety, Department of Community Affairs.
