Definition
Under the general supervision of a Principal Zoologist, Non-Game or other supervisory officer in the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, Department of Environmental Protection, assists in the development and implementation of research and management programs related to all phases of the State's Non-game wildlife resources: does other related work.
Examples of work
- Assists in the development of management plans for the Division's Endangered and Non-game Species Program, including studies and revisions of non-game wildlife distribution, resource inventories, and organizational enhancement activities.
- Assists in evaluating environmental impact statements against existing non-game wildlife resources.
- Provides technical assistance to zoological parks, organizations, public and private agencies and individuals relative to non-game wildlife research, management, protection and control.
- Assists in the development and implementation of programs to delineate, inventory, manage and maintain critical non-game wildlife habitats on both public and private lands.
- Reviews existing and proposed local, state and federal legislation and provides recommendations for revisions.
- Assists in administering a Statewide program to rehabilitate injured or orphaned wildlife species.
- Assists in the development of research contracts with private consultants or university personnel.
- Reviews and issues non-game wildlife possession permits.
- Participates in conferences, meetings and other related activities regarding non-game wildlife issues.
- Distributes programs and educational materials to acquaint the public with the State's non-game resources, programs, and non-game wildlife control problems.
- Assists in conducting studies involving the life history, status, distribution and management requirements of the State's non-game and wildlife resources.
- Assists in preparing articles, pamphlets and other informational material for public distribution.
- Prepares reports and correspondence on non-game wildlife management matters containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
- Maintains records and files.
- Reviews and edits reports prepared on assigned research and management activities.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in one of the Biological Sciences, or a Bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management with a major concentration in Fisheries Science and/or Wildlife Science.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in wildlife biology and/or the development of wildlife management programs.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of the principles, objectives, and standards of wildlife management.
- Knowledge of the methods used to conduct research and studies.
- Knowledge of program development techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret laws, rules, regulations and policies and apply them to specific situations.
- Ability to prepare reports of investigations, and research containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to conduct studies and research.
- Ability to prepare informational material.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with representatives from local, State and Federal governmental officials, environmental groups, and the general public.
- Ability to collect and analyze data.
- Ability to maintain essential records, and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
