STATE COMPTROLLER

Auditing how public money is actually spent is the whole point of this office — State agencies, local governments, school districts, authorities and their contractors all fall within reach, and large public contracts are reviewed before they are awarded. The Medicaid fraud division sits here too.

The Comptroller is nominated by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate for a fixed six-year term, a length chosen deliberately to outlast the administration that appointed the holder. Independence of that kind is the reason the office cannot be an examined one.
