Definition
Under direction of a Supervisor of Rehabilitation Training or Assistant Supervisor of Educational Programs in the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Department of Human Services, provides for the evaluation, education, and training of blind and visually impaired and multihandicapped individuals in the area of particular specialty in order to prepare them for maximal independent living, orientation, mobility, and vocational skills; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Provides instruction regarding all aspects of diagnostic evaluation, prevocational training, and specific training in the area of particular specialty.
- Reviews medical and social case histories of the individual and consults with other professional staff to provide for vocational and educational development.
- Plans an organized instructional approach aimed at developing basic academic concepts, establishing vocational direction, evaluating potential, and providing training.
- Determines the material, equipment, and apparatus required to meet educational and vocational needs of the individual.
- Provides consultative services to students, family members, and school personnel and the implications of visual loss and techniques utilized to accommodate this loss.
- Works with local child study teams to ensure proper educational placement and development and implementation of individual educational plans.
- Teaches principles of orientation skills, concept development, environment awareness, and spatial relations through use of auditory, olfactory, factual, kinesthetic, and remaining visual sense.
- Attends weekly meetings with other professional staff and supervisory personnel to discuss individual case problems and individual progress.
- Prepares reports, lesson plans, and correspondence relative to the individual's educational and vocational progress and needs.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Possession of one of the following:
A valid "Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired" Standard Certificate, endorsement code 2415, issued by the Board of Examiners of the New Jersey Department of Education,
<b>OR</b>
A valid orientation and mobility instructor certification issued by either the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Educational Specialists or the National Blindness Certification Board.
Experience
Twenty-four (24) months of appropriate, certified teaching experience in an approved school.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of laws of New Jersey and regulations, programs, responsibilities, facilities, standards, and policies of the Department of Human Services and the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired concerning the educational and vocational evaluation of visually impaired persons.
- Knowledge of qualifications and requisites of the professional field in regard to the area of particular speciality.
- Ability to assess needs of the individual and develop lesson plans to meet those needs.
- Ability to organize and maintain the instruction in the area of particular speciality.
- Ability to make recommendations concerning the educational and vocational potential of individuals.
- Ability to operate a variety of special equipment designed to be used by visually impaired individuals.
- Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, public school personnel, parents, student teachers, and other professionals.
- Ability to write clear and concise lesson plans, school reports, and evaluations.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
