Definition

Under supervision of a professional trainer in the Department of Human Services, assists in preparation of training units to be used in presenting operating instructions and management philosophy to employee groups and conducts training tailored to the specific needs of the department; does other related work.

Examples of work

  • Conducts studies of Departmental and unit programs and operating procedures with particular emphasis on new programs and revisions made necessary by changes in legislation and workloads and the reassignment of functions.
  • Assists in the planning and development of tentative training plans; assists with the writing of training bulletins, manuals, bibliographies, and other materials.
  • Aids Training Technicians when conferring with Department officers concerning approved training projects, the proper use of training manuals and related materials, and problems which may arise.
  • Conducts and assists in orientation, in-service, refresher and other type of training classes and groups.
  • May attend formal and informal training sessions; studies government personnel and training procedures, practices, standards and techniques and specific work process and methods of a State department or agency.
  • Instructs appropriate staff in those principles and techniques that provide them with a systematic and informed approach in dealing effectively, therapeutically and safely with persons in crisis who exhibit aggressive and/or violent behavior.
  • Instructs staff on the procedures for documentation, the use and effects of medication, Normalization and the Patient's Bill of Rights.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Completion of sixty (60) semester hour credits at an accredited college or university.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in a large public or private agency assisting in the training and counseling of employees, clients, or residents.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • Knowledge of individual and group differences, physical and mental.
  • Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret laws, rules and regulations and apply them to specific situations.
  • Ability to profit by an in-service training program in government personnel and training procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to learn from observation, reading, oral and written explanation, and demonstrations.
  • Ability to keep current with literature, trends of thought, and new developments in personnel administration, and new legislation concerning the work of the Departments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with associates and others involved in the work of the unit or Department.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
