Definition
Under the administrative direction of a Supervising Medical Examiner or other supervisor in the Division of Disability Determinations, Department of Labor, offers technical assistance to lay professional staff and participates as a member of a review team in a program of medical determinations rendered by the Division; does related work as required.

Examples of work
- Reviews and evaluates recommendations of lay professional staff regarding disposition of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income claims for disability benefits including initial requests, continuing disability insurance, and reconsideration claims.
- Interprets the laws, rules, and policies relating to medical aspects of disability determinations under the Social Security Law to lay professional staff.
- Reviews staff evaluation of available medical evidence and recommends purchase of such consultative examinations; and may, as a member of the review team, concur or object to the purchase of same.
- Periodically addresses groups regarding the programs of Division of Disability Determinations.
- Prepares complex medical opinions in for use by the medical Directors.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited medical School.
License
License to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Ability to make disability determinations in accordance with the provisions of Titles II and XVI of the Federal Social Security Act.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of public and private organizations.
- Ability to work effectively with supervisors, subordinates, co-workers and interested members of the public.
- Ability to present an effective in-service training program to lay professional staff.
- Ability to prepare complex medical opinions.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
