Definition
Under the direction of a supervisory officer in a state department, institution, or agency, operates, maintains and cleans various types of complex laboratory equipment including, prepares media and reagents, handles specimens, supplies and equipment; cleans and sterilizes contaminated glassware and/or cares for laboratory animals; may provide guidance and instruction and supervise the work of Laboratory Service Worker 1; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Performs and may instruct and supervise subordinate employees in the operation and sterilization of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Personally performs and may instruct and supervise Laboratory Service Workers unpacking laboratory specimens and containers and delivering them to the proper laboratory areas for analyses; inspecting glassware and other materials and equipment for breakage, cleanliness, and fitness for use; and in preparing and sterilizing of simple and complex media for laboratory use.
- Personally performs and may instruct and supervise Laboratory Service Workers cleaning, maintaining and operating laboratory machines and equipment of varied types, including automatic autoclaves, automatic pipette plugging and unplugging machines, turbomatic washing machines, electronic dryers, large ovens, automatic bottle capping equipment, industrial labeling machines, high vacuum autoclaves, and cage washers.
- May perform and instruct and supervise laboratory staff in the handling, sorting, washing, wrapping and sterilizing contaminated laboratory glassware.
- Personally cares for and may instruct and supervise employees caring for laboratory samples and/or animals.
- Observes sanitary procedures.
- Maintains records.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluation and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of sterilization and other laboratory equipment, care of laboratory samples and/or laboratory animals, and the maintenance of related cleaning services.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Knowledge of the types of methods used to care for laboratory animals.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment operated manually or by steam, electricity, waste and/or air.
- Knowledge of the safety precautions used in a laboratory.
- Knowledge of the composition of simple and complex laboratory media and the procedures required to prepare them.
- Ability to compute mathematical calculations.
- Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions and to learn quickly from demonstrations and oral and written instructions.
- Ability to proved instruction in the operation and maintenance of complex laboratory equipment; the care of lab samples and/or laboratory animals, the processing of simple and complex media, and the handling, sorting, washing, wrapping and sterilizing of laboratory glassware.
- Ability to take the measures required to see that subordinate workers observe established safety procedures and sanitary standards.
- Ability to take pain and to be consistently careful in cleaning, sterilizing, and handling laboratory equipment and to instill proper attitudes and obtain compliance with proper methods on the part of subordinate workers.
- Ability to work effectively with associates and supervising staff.
- Ability to lift and carry bulky and heavy packages of laboratory equipment, materials and supplies.
- Ability to prepare factual records.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
