Definition

Under the supervision of a Geologist or other supervisor, learns to perform the field and office work pertaining to sub-surface investigations, soil compaction, mineral resources and other geologic duties; does other related work.

Examples of work

  • Learns to gather, compile, analyze and interpret the results of geologic work.
  • Learns to prepare maps showing the distribution and attitude of geologic formations, ore deposits, underground water, and other features.
  • Learns to collect data for borings and sub-surface investigations.
  • Learns to collect and prepare needed samples and materials for laboratory study.
  • Learns to collect specimens for geological collections.
  • Learns to assist in geophysical and geological surveys.
  • Learns to acquire information concerning the geology of an area through the examination of new road cuts, quarry operations, well samples and reports of mineral production.
  • Learns to prepare graphs and diagrams on geologic conditions.
  • Learns to utilize and maintain special tools and equipment used in geologic work.
  • Learns to utilize computer applications in geographical problem solving.
  • Prepares reports of studies and other surveys containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Geology or a Bachelor's degree including or supplemented by thirty (30) semester hour credits in geologic subjects areas.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of the techniques used to gather, compile, interpret and present the results of geologic work. Knowledge of the techniques used to prepare graphs, diagrams and other illustrations of geologic conditions. Knowledge of techniques used to collect and prepare specimens. Ability to learn to utilize special tools and equipment used in geologic work. Ability to prepare accurate maps and diagrams. Ability to collect and prepare needed samples and materials for laboratory study. Ability to prepare reports of studies and surveys containing findings, conclusions and recommendations. Ability to establish and maintain records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform the essential duties of the position after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible. ADVANCEMENT Applicants who successfully complete the 12-month training period will be eligible for advancement to an Assistant Geologist level title under Department of Personnel procedures. The inability of an employee to attain a level of performance warranting advancement to the Assistant Geologist level shall be considered as cause for separation.
