Definition
Under immediate supervision of a naturalist or other supervisory officer in the Department of Environmental Protection, works at division installations in a program of public contact to explain division projects, collect entry fees, conduct tours of facilities, hand out literature, and explain exhibits and other educational materials: does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Conducts public tours and explains the operation of fish hatcheries and other division facilities.
- Hands out literature and explains educational programs/exhibits.
- Collects entry fees and directs the public to various facilities located at division installations.
- Informs the public about the hours and rules regarding visitations.
- May schedule groups for visits/tours of division facilities.
- Prepares correspondence in the course of official duties.
- Answers telephone inquiries.
- May perform routine maintenance of division installations.
- Operates and sets up audiovisual equipment such as video tape play back equipment, slide projectors, tape recorders, microphones, screens, and movie projectors.
- Maintains schedules, records, and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience as a tour guide of a public or private natural resource or conservation facility or in resource interpretive work.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of techniques of communication.
- Knowledge of the operation of audiovisual equipment.
- Knowledge of principles of natural resource management.
- Ability to read and understand rules and procedures of public use and visitation to division facilities.
- Ability to communicate with various groups/individuals visiting division installations.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to operate various types of audiovisual equipment.
- Ability to conduct tours and control groups of people.
- Ability to explain division projects/programs.
- Ability to maintain schedules, records, and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
