Definition
Under supervision of the Assistant Director of Nursing Services, plans, coordinates, and carries out educational programs for all nursing personnel; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Orients new staff members and provides inservice refresher programs for professional nurses returning to hospital nursing service.
- Schedules inservice educational programs for professional nurses already on the staff according to department work requirements.
- Provides lectures, and demonstrates new procedures for nursing service.
- Lectures on and demonstrates procedures in the classroom on clinical areas using motion pictures, charts, slides, projectors, and other audiovisual aides.
- Prepares and issues trainee manuals which describe duties and responsibilities of nursing personnel to be used as training guides in orientation, refresher, and other nursing education programs.
- Familiarizes new employees with the physical layout of the hospital and hospital policies and procedures as well as the organizational structures.
- Plans educational programs for paraprofessional nursing personnel and schedules classes in basic patient care procedures.
- Teaches nursing procedures by demonstration in classrooms and clinical units.
- Observes trainees in the practical application of procedures.
- Secures the cooperation of Supervisors of Nurses and Head Nurses to assist in teaching their specialty.
- Coordinates training with all nursing service units to maintain consistency in practice and establish relationships and to point out variations of duties required by different units and on different shifts.
- Prepares, administers, and scores examinations to determine trainees' suitability for the job.
- Makes recommendations to nursing service regarding placement of trainees according to test scores and practical application performance.
- Plans for education programs and schedules classes.
- Plans for and participates in relevant programs in the community and with other disciplines.
- Conducts meetings with trainees and with supervisors to discuss problems and ideas for improving nursing service training programs. Prepares written summaries and reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Education.
Experience
Three (3) years of nursing experience which shall have included nursing instruction.
License
Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of theory, principles, standards, methods, and techniques of general nursing and specialized nursing.
- Knowledge of basic academic and practical materials considered necessary in the training of nurses and their application to specific situations.
- Knowledge of the fundamental literature of nursing and psychiatric nursing and of theories, practices, and techniques.
- Ability to present ideas and subject matter to trainees and professional staff.
- Ability to express clearly ideas and techniques.
- Ability to understand medical terminology.
- Ability to prepare manuals to be used in training nurses.
- Ability to assign and instruct students.
- Ability to supervise and evaluate the performance of their academic and practical work.
- Ability to review, check, and evaluate individual progress or lack of progress of students and to plan work assignments which will overcome weaknesses.
- Ability to organize assigned nursing instruction work and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to interpret basic standards and established procedures.
