Definition

Under direction of the Executive Director on other executive, assists in the development and administration of functions such as engineering and/or operations, programs, planning/research, fiscal, and administrative functions of the division/department; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • May assist the Executive Director by reviewing detailed budget requests from subordinate units to ensure that requests comply with the comprehensive programs approved by the Commissioner.
  • Represents the Executive Director at various official functions/meetings where department/division policy, priorities, and other high level matters are to be considered.
  • Supervises the department heads of agency programs and the administration/coordination of those programs.
  • Initiates and directs new programs including trial and innovative projects/studies.
  • May assist with coordination of activities of the major functions under the Executive Director.
  • May assist the Executive Director in exercising executive control/direction over engineering and/or operations function responsible for acquisition of real estate for public use and distribution of state and federal funds to local political subdivisions.
  • May assist the Executive Director in exercising executive control/direction over the planning/research function responsible for developing a state plan, and performs such research as may be required.
  • May assist the Executive Director in exercising executive control/direction of fiscal management responsible for department/unit accounting, budgeting, and auditing functions and for the entire fiscal integrity of federal funds allocated.
  • May assist the Executive Director in exercising executive control/direction over such functions as personnel services, data processing, engineering, and central services functions.
  • Performs such special functions and directs such special projects as may be delegated by the Executive Director.
  • Manages operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

Experience

Six (6) years of managerial experience in public administration.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
