Definition
Under direction of Project Engineer, Structural, Transportation, performs the more complex tasks involved in working out and checking detailed structural designs, drawings and estimates of the costs of highway bridges and other structures; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Assigns work and checks the work of Senior Engineers, Structural Bridge Design and other subordinate staff.
- Reviews design projects, including site conditions, to assemble necessary information to prepare design requirements and details for new structures, widenings, and existing structure rehabilitation.
- Prepares the more complex and detailed information including the layout necessary for the development of contract drawings.
- Performs complex structural design calculations for bridges and related structures.
- Conducts required vertical and horizontal geometrical calculations for detail layouts.
- Computes the involved quantities of contract items needed for bridges and other structural work.
- Checks complicated contract drawings for conformance with design requirements, structural details and notes.
- Checks shop drawings and contractors' working drawings and related computations and recommends appropriate action within the necessary time frame.
- Provides check of final structural design requirements, including difficult analysis of planning and of specific members and details.
- Attends pre-construction and other technical meetings to allow construction of project to proceed on schedule.
- Prepares complicated alternate structural designs, including cost estimates, to facilitate economic design determinations.
- During project construction, investigates the more complex problem encountered and reviews and/or develops satisfactory resolutions.
- Reviews the more complicated analyses and may develop structural items from departmental unit and other agency requests.
- Assists in development and/or develops in-house engineering oriented programming.
- Prepares engineering reports of a technical nature, which may include recommendations for various actions.
- Prepares and interprets computer data related to individual engineering projects.
- Utilizes computer applications in engineering problem solving.
- Maintains records and files.
- May be required to learn various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in structural design and/or structural engineering work.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems involved in preparing contract drawings of bridge and other structures using computations and sketches and which include the layout and complete details.
- Knowledge of the making of pencil and ink tracings and complete contract drawings.
- Knowledge of the procedures and techniques used in computing the quantity of contract items needed for the construction of bridges and other structures and in checking contract, shop, and contractor's working drawings.
- Knowledge of problems involved in the preparation of alternate structural designs, including cost estimates.
- Knowledge of problems encountered during project construction and possible solutions.
- Knowledge of the capabilities and applications of computers in engineering situations and projects.
- Ability to assign and direct the work of staff.
- Ability to carry out structural design assignments.
- Ability to analyze the problems involved in preparing contract drawings of entire bridge and other structures from basic computations and sketches.
- Ability to prepare and trace complete drawings and to check contract, shop, and contractors working drawings.
- Ability to compute and make complicated estimates of contract items required for bridge and other structural construction projects.
- Ability to make the required to geometrical calculations.
- Ability to provide check of final structural design requirements including the analysis of planning and of specific members and details.
- Ability to survey design project and assemble necessary information.
- Ability to review and develop solutions to problems encountered during project construction.
- Ability to analyze and develop structural items.
- Ability to plan and undertake the collection and analysis of engineering data for computer processing and to read and interpret the results.

A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology (BSET) in a field related to civil engineering from an accredited college having a curriculum approved by the Accreditation Board of Engineering Technology (ABET) meets the above education requirements.
Possession of a valid license as a Professional Engineer issued by the State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
