Definition

Under direction of a physician or other supervisory official in an institution in the Department of Human Services, performs the technical work involved in the operation of electroencephalograph and electrocardiograph equipment, including the making of minor adjustments and repairs; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Under direction, organizes, assigned electroencephalograph and electrocardiograph work and develops effective work methods.
• When assigned to electroencephalograph work:
• Attaches electrodes to predetermined positions on the forehead, scalp, and ears of the patient; turns on the machine and rotates the switches to obtain tracings which measure impulse frequencies in electrical potential between the several areas of the brain to obtain data for use in the diagnosis of brain disorders; during tests, eliminates all traces caused by outside interferences, including those caused by the patient opening his eyes or turning his head; removes electrodes at the end of the test and cleans off the paste or other substances used in attaching the electrodes to the patient; makes minor adjustments and repairs to the electroencephalograph machine, including replacing electrodes; exercises considerable care and tact in securing the cooperation of patients or other subjects and uses judgement in determining the length of tests in order to obtain adequate results.
• When assigned to the electrocardiograph work:
• Instructs and helps the patient to assume the proper position on the table and to remove sufficient clothing to expose chest and ankles; pastes or otherwise attaches electrodes to specified areas of patient's ankles and wrists and connects leads from the electrocardiograph to the electrodes with small clamps or screw attachments; administers the tests by operating the electrocardiograph machine in order to obtain a tracing of electromotive variations in the action of specific areas of the heart muscle; identifies sections of tracings by pressing a marker button using a number system to signify electrode positions; removes electrodes for the patient; removes the tracing from the electrocardiograph; maintains the electrocardiograph by replenishing the supply of tracing papers.
• Takes the measures required to ensure the care, custody, and safety of patients.
• Makes the necessary minor adjustments and repairs to equipment and sees that equipment is functioning properly at all times; reports malfunction.
• Makes the required notations and reports of tests for submission to the supervisory official.
• Maintains records and files of tests and test results.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.

Successful completion of one (1) or more of the following forms of training in electroencephalograph equipment operation:

An Associate's degree which shall have included such specific training, and/or

A formal Electroencephalograph Technician course given by a school or other organization, and/or

Six (6) months of experience in the use of such equipment which shall have included on-the-job training by an experienced technician or physician.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the approved operation and use of electroencephalograph and electrocardiograph equipment.
• Knowledge of and skill in the care, minor adjustment, maintenance, and operation of electroencephalograph and electrocardiograph equipment.
• Knowledge of the medical and psychiatric terminology commonly used in hospitals and other institutions.
• Ability to organize assigned equipment operation, adjustment and minor repair work, and develop effective work methods.
• Ability to learn quickly from oral and written instructions and explanations and from demonstrations.
• Ability to recognize defective and unsatisfactory operation of the several types of equipment, and make the necessary adjustments and minor repairs.
• Ability to distinguish tracings indicative of brain disease from those caused by outside interferences.
• Ability to gain and retain the confidence and cooperation of patients undergoing tests.
• Ability to work sympathetically with patients who are mentally ill or developmentally disabled.
• Ability to take the approved measures needed to ensure the care, custody, and safety of patients.
• Ability to prepare and maintain test recordings.
• Ability to maintain essential records and files.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
