Definition

Under supervision, types copy from Ediphone, Dictaphone, Soundscriber, Gray Audiograph or other recording equipment; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Transcribes dictation from an Ediphone, Dictaphone, Soundscriber, Gray Audiograph machine or other recording equipment; types technical, scientific, financial, statistical, and other statements, and reports, certificates, correspondence, memoranda, payrolls, vouchers, purchase orders, charts, forms, tabulations, bills, warrants, contracts, specifications, case records, manuscripts, and legal documents.
  • Cuts stencils.
  • Checks and compares finished copy.
  • Composes and types routine correspondence and fills in forms, circular letters, and form letters as directed.
  • Addresses, stamps, and mails department envelopes and other mail.
  • Operates numbering, time stamping, and dating machine.
  • Operates varied types of office machines and equipment, including manually and electrically operated typewriters, duplicating machines, and adding machines as may be required.
  • Maintains established records and files where selection and classification of data does not require difficult decisions and where procedures are routinized.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of modern office methods, practices, routines, machines, and equipment. Knowledge of the operation of the Ediphone, Dictaphone, Soundscriber, Gray Audiograph Machine or other recording devices and of the taking and transcribing of dictation using such equipment. Ability to do difficult and complicated typing work with reasonable speed, accuracy, and neatness. Ability to cut stencils. Ability to proofread typed copy. Ability to use good English, to spell correctly, and to compose routine business letters. Ability to properly use and care for manually and electrically operated typewriters, duplicating machines and Ediphone, Dictaphone, Soundscriber, or Gray Audiograph machine equipment. Ability to maintain established records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
