Examples of work

  • Organizes assigned clerical, typing, and other work and develops effective work methods.
  • Serves as an interpreter to a professional staff who is deaf or hearing impaired.
  • Interprets meetings, conferences, and telephone calls.
  • Types routine letters and reports and independently makes changes to fit various situations; types confidential and other correspondence.
  • Operates the teletypewriter for the deaf (TTY).
  • Operates office machines.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of typing experience in general office work which shall have included one (1) year as an interpreter in a variety of situations involving the deaf and hearing impaired.

<b>SPECIAL SKILL</b>

Appointee must be able to communicate effectively in the language of the deaf, particularly American Sign Language, sufficiently to perform essential functions of this position.

<b>SPECIAL NOTE:</b>

Appointees for Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf must successfully pass a screening process administered by the school's Deaf and Hard of Hearing Committee.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of approved English usage, correct spelling, sentence structure and paragraphing.
  • Knowledge of office and clerical methods, practices, routines, machines, and equipment.
  • Ability to interpret into the language of signs in a variety of situations involving the deaf and hearing impaired.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions given in Sign Language as well as verbally.
  • Ability to provide assignments and instruction to clerical staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents, students, and the community.
  • Ability to operate telecommunications devices for the deaf.
  • Ability to apply National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics in the course of assigned duties.
  • Ability to operate typewriters and other office machines.
  • Ability and willingness to accompany the professional to meetings and conferences as part of the duties and responsibilities of that professional outside the office.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
