Definition
Under the direction of a Director of Cloud Operations, Chief Data Officer, Chief Information Officer, or other administrative or executive official in a state department, agency, or institution, designs, develops, and implements AI solutions on cloud platforms; creates scalable, flexible, and cost-effective AI architectures that leverage the capabilities of cloud services to deliver efficient and high-performing AI applications; monitors system performance and identifies opportunities for optimization and improvement; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
Collaborates with stakeholders, data scientists, and AI developers to understand and analyze the requirements and objectives of AI projects. Identifies the most suitable cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) based on the specific needs of the AI applications, budget considerations, and existing IT infrastructure. Designs scalable and fault-tolerant AI architectures on the chosen cloud platform, including selecting appropriate cloud services like virtual machines, containers, storage, and databases. Develops strategies for deploying AI models on the cloud, ensuring efficient model serving and real-time inference capabilities. Implements robust security measures for AI applications, data, and infrastructure in line with industry standards and compliance requirements. Identifies bottlenecks and performance issues in AI applications and optimizing cloud resources to achieve maximum performance. Integrates AI frameworks and libraries with cloud services to streamline AI development and deployment processes. Implements cost-effective solutions, optimizes resource utilization, and monitors cloud costs to ensure efficient use of cloud resources. Designs data pipelines and storage solutions for AI data, ensuring data integrity, accessibility, and compliance. Implements auto-scaling mechanisms to automatically adjust cloud resources based on AI application workload demands. Designs solutions for high availability and disaster recovery to ensure continuous operation of AI applications. Sets up continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to automate the deployment of AI applications, ensuring a smooth and consistent release process. Implements monitoring and alerting solutions to track AI application performance, infrastructure health, and security metrics. Creates detailed documentation for AI cloud architectures, deployment processes, and best practices; may provide instruction to staff on platform-specific features. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to share knowledge and best practices related to AI and cloud technologies; stays current on industry trends and advancements in cloud technology. Conducts prototyping and proof-of-concept projects to demonstrate the feasibility and potential of AI solutions on the cloud. Prepares correspondence and reports. Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, computer engineering, software engineering, information technology, or a related field.
Experience
Six (6) years of experience related to cloud architecture design and/or implementation with a focus on artificial intelligence/machine learning solutions.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge of AI technologies, algorithms, and machine learning processes. Knowledge of data collection and analysis techniques. Knowledge of cloud computing technologies and current trends. Knowledge of cloud platforms (such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud) and their respective services, strengths, and limitations. Knowledge of networking fundamentals. Knowledge of coding and scripting languages (such as Python, Java). Knowledge of security practices, data protection regulations (such as GDPR, HIPAA), and compliance requirements relevant to cloud computing. Knowledge of DevOps methodologies and tools. Knowledge of data storage and data pipelines. Ability to analyze business requirements and technical constraints to determine suitable cloud solutions. Ability to assess cloud platforms' technical capabilities. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to cloud services and platforms. Ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and updates in cloud platforms. Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
