Examples of work

• Operates stationary boilers used in generating power in order to supply steam to turbines and other steam powered equipment.
• Fuels boilers by regulating the flow of oil in oil burners.
• Manipulates valves to control the operation of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges.
• Maintains water in the boiler at the required level.
• Repairs and maintains tubes, caps and turbine boilers.
• Washes boiler and pump rooms, maintains the areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
• Makes emergency repairs and does the work required to keep the machines and equipment in good operating condition.
• Conducts simple tests of boiler water to determine the amount of hardness, acidity and alkalinity, and may operate boiler water conditioning apparatus and equipment.

• <b>REQUIREMENTS
• EXPERIENCE</b>
• One (1) year of experience in work involving the operation and repair of stationary steam boilers and auxiliary equipment of a power plant or high pressure heating plant.

License

Appointees must possess an Operating Engineer's license (Blue Seal Minimum) of the appropriate grade, issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of machines and equipment used in a power plant and in a high pressure heating plant, including the supplies, materials, and tools used in lubricating and cleaning the machinery and equipment.
• Knowledge of the methods, and techniques used to repair, maintain tubes and caps, and in turbining boilers.
• Knowledge of the methods and techniques used to fire stationary boilers and the varied types of stokers and their operation, including the several types of safety devices and measures.
• Knowledge of the proper levels for water boilers for their safety and efficient operation.
• Ability to identify steam boiler equipment operation and maintenance problems.
• Ability to fire stationary boilers used to generating power to supply steam to turbines and other steam- powered equipment.
• Ability to operate boilers, regulating the flow of oil and to control the operations of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges.
• Ability to maintain the water in the boilers at the needed levels and to regulate the draft.
• Ability to inspect and check safety devices and units and to keep the machinery and equipment properly cleaned and lubricated.
• Ability to repair, maintain and install tubes and caps, and in turbining boilers.
• Ability to take and record instrument readings.
• Ability to maintain the boiler and pump areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
• Ability to record and maintain records and files on the systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow.

• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
