Definition
Under direction of a Supervising Institutional Trade Instructor (warehousing), or other designated supervising official in the Department of Corrections, assists in the overall work activities of a trade training program for inmates in a correctional facility; as required assigns tasks to subordinate employees and takes the lead in the areas of warehouse and/or commissary operations maintaining the physical plant of the warehouse and/or commissary; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Organizes trades instruction in warehousing and/or commissary operation/maintenance, and develops effective work methods.
- May instruct, and train Institutional Trade Instructors of lower grades, and inmates in all operations and phases of the work involved in warehousing and/or commissary operations.
- May train Institutional Trade Instructors of lower grades and inmates in the receiving, storage and shipping of quality products in accordance with production and/or stock rotation schedules.
- May train inmates in the proper use, care and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and tools, including forklifts and trucks as well as the proper storage of materials and goods.
- Maintains records on inmates' progress, writes reports and recommends changes.
- Ensures that both material on hand and orders are received/shipped/stored properly.
- Requisitions supplies and maintains necessary inventory control of items in warehouse and/or commissary.
- Prepares bill of lading, order of consignment, and other shipping and receiving documents, and reviews for accuracy.
- Ensures the custody, security, and safety of inmates in accordance with institutional policy.
- As directed, prepares reports that include statistical summaries of inventory, identifying trends when appropriate.
- Maintains records and files including but not limited to debit/credit ledgers, inventories of stock on hand and issued.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- <b>REQUIRMENTS</b>
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in the warehouse and/or commissary trades which include the receipt, recording, storage and distribution of varied types of equipment, materials, and supplies, one (1) year of which shall have been in the training of new workers.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary t o perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the equipment, tools and materials used in the operation and maintaining of large storage and/or warehousing areas, care and maintenance of fork lifts.
- Knowledge of warehousing and/or commissary trade and the methods used in shipping and receiving of storage products.
- Knowledge of storage layouts, operating procedures, and standards of quality.
- Knowledge of inventory control and storage techniques, including but not limited to product shelf life, First In First OUT (FIFO), Last In First Out (LIFO).
- Ability to analyze the factors developing a program of warehousing and/or commissary trades instruction and production work involved and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to take the lead over subordinate staff.
- Ability to develop production/delivery schedules and see that deadlines are met.
- Ability to provide appropriate assignments and instructions and train Institutional Trade instructors, inmates and employees assigned to warehousing and/or commissary industry and oversee the performance of their work.
- Ability to provide for the custody, security, and safety of inmates.
- Ability to keep records of inmate attendance, wages and progress.
- Ability to develop and review bill of lading, orders of consignment, and other shipping and receiving documents.
- Ability to requisition materials and maintain an inventory of stores, materials and equipment used and on hand.
- Ability to maintain records and files including debit/credit ledgers and accounts.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
