Definition
Under the direction of the Farm Supervisor in the Department of Corrections, assists in the institution dairy and farm operations; has responsibility for completion of farm/dairy work and the coordination, instruction, training, care and custody of inmates; as required assigns tasks to subordinate employees and takes the lead in the work activities in the area of farm operations; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Assists in planning the work of the assigned area and oversee the conduct of all phases of the work, including the vocational training of inmates.
- Organizes, trains, participates in, and oversees inmates and/or employees in the use and maintenance of dairy plant and farm equipment including pasteurization, cooling, and packaging; equipment including tractors, planters, harvesters, tandem axle tracks, balers, hand tools and bench equipment.
- Prepares estimates for crop planting, fertilization and storage needs as necessary to assure maximum production at minimum expense within appropriate time tables.
- Oversees employees and/or inmates and participates in the work operations and functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Trains inmates and/or employees in planting, fertilizing and cultivating grain crops utilized in the dairy operation and in the formulation of dairy and beef herd feeding rations.
- Takes measures required for the safety, custody and welfare of inmates assigned to institution farm/dairy.
- Trains, administers and participates in the sterilization of dairy utensils and equipment; is responsible for maintaining sanitary conditions of equipment utilized in the pasteurization, cooling, and packaging of milk products.
- Trains employees and/or inmates, takes the lead in the operation of, and operates farm/dairy machinery equipment and vehicles utilized in production, packaging and delivery of farm products.
- Prepares requisitions for farm and dairy equipment, materials and supplies; ensures that these are obtained, stored, safeguarded, recorded and properly used.
- Assumes responsibility for the safety of inmates by instructing them in safe practices and by taking the lead in accident prevention measures and programs and in the elimination of hazards; enforces safety rules and regulations.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience as a dairy worker or farmer.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of dairy and farm equipment and hand and bench tools.
- Ability to take the lead over subordinate staff.
- Ability to instruct and oversee inmates in the work force on a dairy and grain farm and dairy processing plant.
- Ability to provide vocational training to inmates.
- Ability to take approved measures required to insure the health, custody, welfare, and training of assigned inmates.
- Ability to prepare statistical inmate progress reports.
- Ability to maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
