Definition
Under supervision of a supervisory official in a correctional facility in the Department of Corrections, coordinates, plans, trains, assists inmates, and as necessary lower grade employees in work activities in the area of the electronics shop; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- May assist in the organization of electronic trade instruction work and helps develop effective work methods.
- Trains and instructs in the several phases and operations of electronic systems including the Geonet Microwave Detection System, graphic and touch screen security systems, closed circuit TV systems, metal detectors, and fire alarm systems.
- Assigns and instructs inmates and other employees assigned to the electronics shop.
- Instructs and trains inmates in the care, use, and maintenance of electronic equipment.
- Takes assigned work projects and follows them to completion.
- Ensures that materials and equipment are properly used and conserved.
- Ensures that work, preventive maintenance, and schedules are maintained.
- Prepares inmate and work program progress reports.
- May assist in calculating costs and carries out assigned cost and quality control programs, and maintains cost records.
- Takes measures required to ensure the care, custody, and safety of inmates in accord with institution rules and regulations.
- Prepares and maintains cost, time, progress, and quality records.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience at the journey level in the electronics trade or as a trade or vocational education instructor in electronics, or any combination thereof.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of tools, equipment, and meters used in electronic maintenance and repair.
- Ability to analyze industrial training and production problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to assign and instruct staff and inmates assigned to the electronics shop.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with superior officers, instructors, institution staff, and others interested in or concerned with electronics maintenance.
- Ability to take prescribed measures to ensure the care, custody, training, and safety of inmates.
- Ability to prepare and take the lead in preparation of accurate, informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to keep accurate records of time, materials used, costs, and inmate progress.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
