Definition
Under supervision of a Supervisory officer in a correctional facility in the Department of Corrections, coordinates, plans, trains and oversees inmates; as required assigns tasks to subordinate employees and takes the lead in the work activities in the area of carpentry; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Teaches inmate students the fundamentals of new house construction and general home repairs; provides instruction in furniture making and other carpentry work.
- Prepares lesson plans and evaluates each student's progress by projects and written examinations.
- Maintains records on inmate progress, writes reports and recommends program changes.
- Aids the student to evaluate his/her curriculum and suggests changes.
- Requisitions supplies and maintains an inventory necessary for wood and/or general carpentry.
- Teaches inmate students to identify, care for, and use the necessary hand tools and equipment applicable to carpentry.
- Insures the care, custody, security, and safety of inmates in accordance with institution policy.
- Counsels any troubled inmate or refers him/her for further counseling.
- Attends staff meetings and in-service training programs.
- Oversees and directs the work of assistant instructors as required.
- Prepares reports.
- Maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in carpentry.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of hand tools, equipment, and power tools used in carpentry including: lathes, shapers, routers, table and radial saws, sanders and measuring devices and their proper use and maintenance.
- Knowledge of the woods and other materials used in construction and furniture making and finishing and the methods of storing and curing rough and finished lumber and other building materials.
- Knowledge of shop layout, operating procedures, and standards of quality.
- Ability to teach inmates basic carpentry.
- Ability to keep records of inmate attendance, wages, and progresses.
- Ability to take the lead over subordinate staff.
- Ability to set-up and make minor repairs to power equipment.
- Ability to counsel inmates and provide for their safety and custody.
- Ability to requisition materials and maintain an inventory of materials and equipment used and on hand.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to learn and utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, officer or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
