Definition
Under supervision of a supervisory official in a correctional or juvenile institution or agency, coordinates, plans, trains, and oversees inmates; as required assigns tasks to subordinate employees and takes the lead in work activities in the area of haircutting; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Coordinates and plans a curriculum designed to instruct inmates in haircutting techniques and methods.
- Oversees inmates in haircutting activities ensuring that they utilize the techniques and methods taught.
- Oversees and instructs inmates to ensure that barbering tools are properly cared for and that barbershop areas are kept in a clean, neat, sanitary, and orderly condition, and takes the lead in the sterilization of tools and equipment.
- Provides barbering services to inmates at a correctional or juvenile facility.
- Prepares reports and evaluations regarding the progress of inmates in the training program.
- Collaborates with other professional staff in developing individual educational plans for inmates.
- Takes measures required to ensure the proper care, custody, and welfare of inmates.
- Submits requests for equipment and supplies that accurately reflect program needs.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of haircutting experience.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a valid license as a Barber issued by the New Jersey State Board of Barber Examiners.
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of problems involved in supervising the conduct of a barbershop.
- Knowledge of precautions to be taken in safeguarding barbering instruments to ensure that they do not get into the hands of inmates.
- Knowledge of procedures used in making a daily check of equipment to ensure that it is in good working condition.
- Ability to analyze institution barbering problems, organize assigned instruction work, and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions and to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
- Ability to take the lead over subordinate staff.
- Ability to cut hair of staff and inmates and teach inmates to cut hair in a correctional institution.
- Ability to take the lead in the cleaning of barbershop chairs, clippers, combs, scissors, and cabinets, and sterilize tools and equipment.
- Ability to train in the cleaning of the barbershop, fixtures, and cabinets.
- Ability to see that the floors and walls of the barbershop are washed and waxed, and to oil and grease equipment having movable parts.
- Ability to work effectively with associates and with inmates.
- Ability to give assignments and instructions to inmates and oversee the performance of their work.
- Ability to make periodic inventories of barbering equipment and supplies on hand.
- Ability to requisition, store, record, issue, and instruct the proper use of barber supplies.
- Ability to prepare factual reports.
- Ability to maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
