Definition

Under the direction of the landscape supervisor or other designated supervisor, in a correctional facility or institution, provides vocational training in grounds maintenance and landscaping to inmates, patients or clients and assists in work programs; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Plans or assists in planning the work of the landscaping work program and activities.
  • Instructs inmates, patients, or clients in the use and maintenance of lawn mowers, tractors, spraying devices, chemical applicants, and other grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Instructs inmates, patients or clients in the identification and maintenance of lawns, flowers, trees, and ornamental shrubbery.
  • Trains inmates and/or patients or clients in greenhouse operations and in the use of greenhouse related tools.
  • May drive motor trucks and/or vans to transport inmates, patients or clients.
  • Enforces the use of applicable safety devices and methods (respirators, lawn mower safety equipment, eye shields, gloves, etc.)
  • Oversees the care, custody, security, and safety of inmates, patients or clients in accordance with institutional policy.
  • Instructs inmates, patients or clients to properly use and maintain equipment.
  • Maintains records of inmate and/or patients progress, and of equipment supplies, and production.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two years of experience as a grounds worker or landscaper.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance and landscaping methods, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the safety precautions to be taken in grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Ability to plan or assist in the planning of landscape work programs and activities.
  • Ability to provide vocational instruction in landscape trades.
  • Ability to oversee the care, custody, security and safety of inmates, patients or clients.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain essential records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may be also considered as acceptable forms of communication.
