Definition
Under direction of a Supervising Institutional Trade Instructor or other supervisory official, assists in work involving food processing industry operations; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Participates in, the use and/or maintenance of food processing equipment including mixers, grinders, slicers, stuffers, breading and battering equipment, formers, cutters, and washers.
- Takes measures required for the safety, custody, and welfare of inmates assigned to the food processing industry.
- Operates, handles, and maintains food processing materials and supplies, and ensures that these are obtained, stored, safeguarded, recorded, and properly used.
- Operates food processing equipment utilized in the preparation, processing, packaging, storage, and freezing of various consumable products.
- May assist in ensuring inmate safety by instructing them in safe practices, by taking the lead in accident prevention measures and programs and in eliminating hazards, and enforces safety rules and regulations.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in areas of product formulation including but not limited to processing of raw materials, and the cutting, packaging, shipping, storing, distributing and sanitizing of food products and plant equipment in a commercial or institution kitchen.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of food processing methods, techniques, and organization.
- Ability to provide vocational training to inmates.
- Ability to take approved measures required to ensure the health, custody, welfare, and training of assigned inmates.
- Ability to prepare statistical, inmate progress, and other reports.
- Ability to maintain records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
