Definition
Under direction of a Crew Supervisor or other higher level supervisor of construction and maintenance, Department of Transportation, performs varied construction bridge and repair work, including placing and finishing concrete pavements, curbs, and sidewalks, building inlets, manholes, and other small structures, and/or performs rough carpentry, masonry, concrete and structural steel work, primarily for the maintenance and construction of all bridges and structures on the highways; does other related work.
Examples of work
- Performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks such as construction of pavements, concrete, and bituminous highway structures, including but not limited to the placing and finishing of portland concrete and bituminous concrete.
- Utilizes a variety of building materials including concrete, brick and concrete block to construct sidewalks, curbs, inlets, manholes, headwalls, gutters, and wingwalls.
- Sets up and aligns steel and wood forms for the construction of concrete structures.
- Places pipe for drainage systems and underdrains.
- Uses pneumatic tools, including pavement breakers and jackhammers.
- When required, assists in all phases of work for repairs of the highway system.
- Works on scaffolding to renew and repair headers, stringers, girders and caps, floor beams, and other bridge timbers.
- Participates in the building of timber bridges, bulkheads, culverts, and in pile driving.
- Constructs and repairs timber piers and foundation, timber fenders, plank decks, and sidewalks.
- As part of a crew, performs both inspection work and repair work from a platform truck, hyranger truck, or similar piece of equipment, including work at heights in excess of 50 feet.
- Repairs bridge houses, tool sheds, and other structures.
- Repairs piers and foundations, balustrades, beams, floor slabs, sidewalks and curbs, wing walls, bulkhead walls, retaining walls at approaches, concrete stairways, and other parts of concrete and steel structures requiring the construction of forms and the mixing and placing of concrete.
- Renews and repairs steel bridge gates, ornamental iron fences, gates and balustrades and pipe rail fences.
- Rivets and tightens parts in steel trusses, stiffening chords, braces, buckle plates, lattice chords, and posts.
- Operates trucks, graders, and other construction and road maintenance equipment, and uses equipment and tools for repair of bridges and structures, including air compressors, jackhammers, concrete mixers, and excavation equipment.
- Replaces asphalt and wood block decks and granite block on roadway and bridge approaches.
- Keeps records.
- Performs any type of emergency work including snow removal and ice control, and is available after normal hours.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in work involving the repair and maintenance of bridges and general construction including bituminous pavements, carpentry, masonry, steel work, finishing concrete, laying bricks and concrete blocks, and/or dock building.
License
Appointees must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the tools, materials, and procedures used in finishing concrete structures, walks, and pavements, in laying brick and concrete blocks, and in setting up steel and wood frames.
- Knowledge of erecting, rigging, and scaffolding, replacing stringers, deck planks, pilings and caps, and doing other rough carpentry, masonry, concrete and structural steel work required in bridge maintenance and construction.
- Ability to perform the skilled and semi-skilled work involved in placing and finishing concrete and bituminous concrete.
- Ability to install drainage pipe and other types of drainage facilities.
- Ability to read and interpret simple drawings.
- Ability to use and care for equipment and materials.
- Ability to transfer grades from engineers' stakes to appropriate location on work site or work piece.
- Ability to operate trucks, graders, and other road maintenance equipment.
- Ability to guide and instruct other workers in the mixing of concrete and mortar.
- Ability to work at heights and to use scaffolding, rigging, boatswains' chairs, and other equipment which could cause the repairman to be suspended on a platform under a structure.
- Ability to repair and replace headers, stringers, girders and caps, and to build temporary timber bridges, bulkheads, and other structures.
- Ability to construct and repair timber piers and foundations, fenders, plank decks, and sidewalks.
- Ability to repair concrete and steel structures as well as constructing forms, mixing and pouring of concrete.
- Ability to operate trucks and other road maintenance equipment.
- Ability to rivet and/or tighten parts in steel bridge gates and to tighten pipe rail fences, balustrades, or other apparatus attached to bridges.
- Ability to keep accurate records.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations, including snow removal and ice control.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
