Examples of work
- Takes the lead in loading, unloading, lifting, moving and placing of supplies of varied types.
- May drive a truck or other vehicle on designated assignments.
- Takes the lead in the digging of ditches; does manual grading work; takes the lead in the shoveling of snow and in ice removal work.
- Supervises lower grade employees in and personally cuts grass, rakes lawns, waters flower beds and other garden areas; hoes and weeds garden areas; supervises these activities.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Takes the lead in moving furniture and other institution equipment.
- Takes the lead in and supervises a group of employees engaged in cleaning tasks, including cleaning, waxing and polishing floors of varied types and in the dusting and waxing of furniture, woodwork and windows.
- May operate excavation equipment, mixers and other equipment in varied types of construction and/or maintenance work.
- Takes a lead in setting grade, laying sewer and drain pipes, transplanting trees, and doing varied types of landscape work.
- Does and supervises other assigned tasks which do not require specific skills or training.
- In the Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo fire training classes.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- <b>REQUIREMENTS
- EXPERIENCE </b> One year of experience of varied types of construction, maintenance and other laboring work.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the usual tasks to be done in the maintenance of buildings and grounds.
- Ability to understand and carry out assigned manual work and to learn from instructions and from demonstrations.
- Ability to give written and oral instructions and directions to laborers engaged in the work of the program.
- Ability to drive a truck or other motor vehicle if necessary.
- Ability to work as one of a group and take the lead as may be required.
- Ability to keep simple records of work completed and materials used.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
