Definition
Under general supervision of Garage Supervisor 1, or higher lever supervisor, supervises Crew Supervisors, Mechanics, and/or other Crew Supervisors, engaged in either the maintenance, fueling, servicing and repair of 500 to 1,500 vehicles and/or pieces of equipment, or the inspection and minor repair of over 1,500 vehicles and/or pieces of equipment; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Supervises one or more working Crew Supervisor, Mechanics in a garage facility or inspection station with mobile teams.
- IN A GAR<b>AGE:</b>
- Organizes the repair, scheduled semi-annual preventive maintenance, and the daily fueling of 500 to 1,500 vehicles and/or pieces of equipment and assigns workloads to Crew Supervisors and their teams.
- IN A INSPECTION STATION:
- Supervises the diagnostic inspections and minor repairs of over 1,500 vehicles and/or pieces of equipment; identifies and refers major repair and maintenance problems to a vehicle repair center.
- Monitors the work activities of mobile teams performing emergency, onsite repair service for Central Motor Pool vehicles.
- Provides technical assistance for the more complex repair activities.
- Schedules leave requests to maintain adequate staffing levels.
- Plans, organizes, and assigns the work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of subordinates.
- Prepares requests for parts, equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Conducts safety inspections of the garage or inspection station.
- Reviews reports on vehicles and/or motorized equipment with excessive downtime; provides advice on replacing vehicles and/or equipment.
- May confer with supervisory personnel to determine repair or replacement costs involving damaged vehicles and/or equipment.
- Prepares reports and correspondence.
- Supervises the maintenance of records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience supervising the work of automotive mechanics; one (1) year of which shall have included responsibility for maintenance, repair, and service program.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of automotive and/or related equipment repair methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of the problems encountered in the maintenance, inspection, servicing and repair of a motor vehicles and/or related equipment.
- Knowledge of supervisory techniques.
- Knowledge of the methods used to calculate vehicle and/or related equipment repair costs.
- Ability to provide technical assistance and guidance to staff.
- Ability to supervise the maintenance, inspection, servicing and repair of a fleet of motor vehicles and/or related equipment.
- Ability to conduct safety inspections of the assigned facility.
- Ability to coordinate the work of one or more maintenance and repair teams or inspection teams.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others.
- Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
- Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
