Definition

Under general supervision, supervises one or more subordinate supervisory staff, involved in the maintenance, servicing and repair of over 1,500 vehicles and/or pieces of equipment for more than one garage facility; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
  • Organizes the repair, scheduled semi-annual preventive maintenance and the daily fueling of over 1,500 vehicles and/or pieces of equipment; assigns the workloads to subordinate supervisory staff and their repair teams.
  • Provides technical assistance for the more complex repair activities.
  • Schedules leave requests, to maintain adequate staffing levels.
  • Provides recommendations for training of employees.
  • Prepares requests for parts, equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Supervises performance and progress of the working teams.
  • Conducts safety inspections of the garages.
  • Provides technical advice and information regarding the reliability of replacement vehicles and/or equipment.
  • May confer with the supervisory personnel to determine repair or replacement costs involving damaged vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Supervises the maintenance of records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience supervising the work of automotive mechanics, one (1) year of which shall have included responsibility for maintenance, repair and service program.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of the problems encountered in the maintenance, servicing and repair of motor vehicles and/or related equipment including heavy-duty equipment.
  • Knowledge of automotive and/or related equipment repair methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to calculate vehicle repair costs.
  • Knowledge of the various types of motor vehicles and/or related motorized equipment including heavy-duty motorized equipment and their fuel efficiency factors, and maintenance and safety records.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications for machinery and supplies.
  • Ability to recommend specifications for machinery and supplies.
  • Ability to read, and interpret the procedures, policies, and standards of the department and apply them to specific situations.
  • Ability to coordinate the work of one or more maintenance and repair teams.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to supervise the maintenance of records and files.
  • Ability to conduct safety inspections of the assigned facility.
  • Ability to supervise the maintenance, inspection, servicing and repair program.
  • Ability to provide technical assistance and guidance to staff.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
